SSIUK Lecture: How the Newspaper came to Tibet: Local Adaptations of a Global Product by Dr. Anna Sawerthal

This talk will give an overview of how the modern, globally known newspaper format arrived to Tibet. The time frame and actors involved in the spread of the newspaper medium, starting from the 20th century, will be presented. The talk will also outline the transformative processes of the newspaper medium itself; when the newspaper medium was introduced to a Tibetan-language audience, it underwent different transformations in order to appeal to specific tastes and established communication forms among Tibetan speakers.

About the speaker: 

 

Dr. Anna Sawerthal is an editor at the international desk of the Austrian daily “Der Standard”, focusing on Asian Affairs. She gained a doctoral degree in Transcultural Studies at Heidelberg University and her Mag.phil. degree at the University of Vienna in Tibetan and Buddhist Studies. She has spent extended periods in Lhasa, Kathmandu and the Indian Himalayas.
