The Prāṇāyāma as a Method of Mental Training and Bodily Transformation in Vajrayāna

Throughout the history of Indian religious traditions, starting from the late Vedic period, the practice of prāṇāyāma, together with its various forms, religious contexts, and the goals (of stilling the mind as a precondition for higher stages, the moral and physical purification, immortality, and liberation), provided the foundation for the prāṇāyāma practice in the Unexcelled Yoga Tantras. Since the time of the Atharva Veda's Prāṇasūkta, the breath has been at times referred to as "death" due to its close relation to time. This lecture will address the various modes and functions of prāṇāyāma in the practices of the Unexcelled Yoga Tantras, specifically within a system of six-phase yoga.
