GATEWAY TO THE TEACHINGS: The Words of the Great Masters –  MODULE 3

REFUGE & BODICHITTA

A six part modular programme introducing Buddhism and exploring its relevance & value for our lives today.

*CZECH, FRENCH AND SPANISH TRANSLATIONS WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE

This training programme is based on a text ‘Gateway to the Teachings’ (as yet unpublished) by the great Dzogchen Master, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, which serves as an introduction to the main principles of the Buddhist Teachings. It also provides a foundation for understanding the Dzogchen approach in the context of Buddhism as a whole. The aim and methodology for this programme is to read and discuss the text in order to understand its relevance to our lives today. The course will incorporate teaching, study and practice using the text ‘Gateway to the Teachings’ as the basis. The programme will consist of six weekends at approximately eight week intervals with weekly practice sessions on Sunday mornings. This course also serves as a follow-up training programme to the earlier modular sessions on ‘Meditation for Daily Life’. All participants will receive an online copy of the ‘Gateway to the Teachings’ upon registration.

MODULE THREE: Refuge & Bodhicitta
This third weekend will focus on the theme of ‘Refuge & Bodhicitta’: an essential aspect of the Buddhist Teachings. Refuge represents a fundamental principle in Buddhism since it recognises the fact that an individual needs to find ‘refuge’ by necessity in their lifetime: on the most mundane level in the form of shelter or protection … but on a more profound level in the form of guidance, teachings and ultimately as a means of overcoming the suffering of samsara. This module will also focus on Bodhicitta all its various aspects: a term which can be interpreted in various ways according to specific Buddhist paths. ‘Bodhi’ is a Sanskrit word which literally means ‘Buddha nature’ or realisation while ‘Citta’ can be translated as ‘heart essence’ or ‘mind essence’. Within the context of Mahayana, Bodhicitta refers to the principle of compassion ie the wish to not only benefit oneself in this lifetime but to altruistically offer help to all sentient beings.
