Celebrating the unique culture of Tibet!

The London Institute of Tibetan Studies focuses on promoting the vitality of Tibet's unique legacy and exploring its relevance for the world today. Our activities encompass the Five Great Fields of Knowledge: Art, Medicine, Language, Philosophy and Meditation / Buddhist Studies through academic lectures, short courses and online study programmes.

Bodhi Day Fish Release
Save the Lives of Fish Awaiting Slaughter!

In Tibetan this practice is known as 'tshe thar', life release

To celebrate the enlightenment of the Buddha (Bodhi Day) and the 80th birthday of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu a fish release will take place in Nepal on December 8th, 2017. Please read below and if interested please do participate.

The fish will be released into environments where they will be able to live undisturbed, such as ponds and lakes where fishing is prohibited. The fish will be blessed with mantras and given myong grol (liberation through tasting), precious substances that give them a good cause for higher future rebirth. It is customary to save a number of animals equal to your age or to the age of the person you are dedicating their release for. So for example a 25 year old would save 25 animals, or if you save fish for a 80 year old you would buy 80 fish. However you can choose to save any number of animals you want. Since a human being can commit no greater sin than taking the life of another living being, by implication, there is no greater source for accumulating merit than saving lives.
